• Upper School Daraja Kenya Cascades Blog - Post One

  After 2 long days of traveling, we finally landed in Nairobi, Kenya! Our first couple of days were spent adjusting to the time change and learning about the wildlife, culture, and history of Kenya. We visited the National Museum of Nairobi, where we explored Kenya’s fight for independence, and we later visited the Giraffe Center. The next day, we drove for a few hours passing various vendors, animals, and cities along the roads of Kenya. At one point, we stopped and bought fresh pineapples from Kikuyu street vendors. We made a pit-stop in the city of Nanyuki and then continued our journey to Twala.
  
  Twala is a special place where Maasai women come together to maintain aspects of their culture, make a living, and create a fund for the girls of their community to experience the education that not all of them could have. For us, the visit to Twala has been one of the main highlights of our trip so far, where we were welcomed by a cultural dance and song. The founder of Twala, Rosemary Nenini, shared her story growing up as a Maasai girl, teaching us about the struggles of Maasai women and the importance of education. On Monday morning, we joined her at her homestead for an early morning livestock walk. Now we are off to Daraja, and we will update during our time there!
