In the Classroom Spotlights

  • Lower School Computing, Engineering, and Design Students Create with LEGO Blueprints Lower School Computing, Engineering, and Design Students Create with LEGO Blueprints
In Kindergarten Computing, Engineering, and Design class, students used LEGOs as their launchpad into engineering and design thinking. This lesson included teamwork and mutual support in their classroom. At this age, working alongside peers, sharing pieces, and jumping in to help a classmate troubleshoot are all core social-emotional and engineering skills.

Lower School Computing, Engineering, and Design (CED) Faculty Jeffery Adjei shared, "Engineering is collaborative, so setting that culture of community and support early on gives our Kindergarten students the confidence to tackle bigger design challenges down the road."

Students carefully followed visual, multi-step building directions to assemble their structures based on blueprints included in each design kit. This process taught spatial reasoning, precision, and sequential thinking, showing that a stable build comes from following a purposeful order of operations.

"As students grow in our CED program, these foundational habits directly feed into more advanced work. Learning how to interpret guides and working through build mistakes now prepares them for independent prototyping, robotics, and physical computing in the grades ahead," Jeffery reflected.

  • Middle School Visual Arts Cultivate Creativity Through Themed Creatures: Real and Imagined Middle School Visual Arts Cultivate Creativity Through Themed Creatures: Real and Imagined
This year, students in Middle School Visual Arts Faculty Rebecca Pleasure's courses explore the theme Creatures: Real and Imagined throughout each grade level as they learn various media, including monoprint techniques, clay, felting and sewing, acrylics, watercolors, and collage. Through hands-on learning in visual arts and being introduced to new artistic mediums, students are challenged to step into unfamiliar art forms, try new techniques, and have the opportunity to explore new passions throughout the course.
  • Upper School Astronomers Scale the Solar System Upper School Astronomers Scale the Solar System
Did you know that if you scale the solar system to campus with the Sun at the corner of E Harrison and Lake Washington Boulevard, Neptune would be all the way at 32nd Ave?! Upper School astronomy students in Upper School Physics and Astronomy Faculty Sam Esbin's class recently used a measuring wheel to scale the solar system, placing a twelve-centimeter-diameter Sun and then a poster board with facts about each planet in their respective locations as they walked down the sidewalk. When they reached 32nd Avenue, they stopped to hold a discussion about what they learned, ask thoughtful questions, and think about even larger scales. Students also explored the scale of light itself: at our model's scale, walking our solar system from the Sun to Neptune would take about four hours!

"The goal of this activity was to help students develop an intuitive, physical understanding of the scale of our solar system by translating astronomical distances and planetary sizes into a model they could experience firsthand." Sam shared, "This project connects directly to our course goals of developing scientific reasoning, applying mathematical skills to real-world problems, and building a deeper understanding of our place in the universe. The activity culminated in a humbling realization that our nearest neighboring star, Alpha Centauri, would be roughly another 2,200 miles away at the same scale. It was a fun, hands-on way to turn abstract astronomical numbers into something tangible, memorable, and, for some students, deeply existential."
