Vape Detectors Installed in Upper School

As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a healthy, respectful, and responsible learning environment, we continue to address behaviors that impact the wellbeing of our community. Last school year, our Facilities Department researched options to help deter vaping on campus. After careful review, we selected Zeptive, whose detectors have now been installed and activated in Upper School bathrooms. This step reflects our shared responsibility to prioritize health and wellness, encourage thoughtful choices, and ensure that our community remains a safe and supportive space for all students.

A few things to know about these detectors:
  • The detectors identify aerosols from e-cigarettes - including nicotine and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
  • An alarm sounds when such aerosols are detected.
  • The detector alarm will also sound if there is any tampering or dismantling of the device.
  • The administration team (deans, director) is alerted via an app when an alarm goes off.

Here is Bush’s policy from the Upper School Handbook:

SMOKING, DRUGS, AND ALCOHOL
The use or possession of drugs, alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, and other illegal substances as well as any smoking/vaping implements or paraphernalia is prohibited on campus and at school-sponsored events and trips both on and off campus. Out of consideration for our neighbors, students may not smoke or use e-cigarettes or vaping implements on adjacent property (e.g. Mud Park). Violations of this rule will result in major disciplinary consequences. Sale or distribution of drugs or alcohol on campus or at school events will most likely result in expulsion.

The use of drugs, alcohol, and illegal substances, including nicotine and marijuana, beyond the school’s purview is also a matter of school concern. Educational efforts will be directed at changing behaviors that pose risks, and the school will communicate with families and make efforts to intervene in situations that threaten the welfare of students.

The Upper School administration, faculty, and staff want to work with students to create a safe and vape-free campus. Students will have opportunities to engage in conversations with their advisors and teachers. We are hoping these detectors, combined with education, will deter vaping on campus and initiate conversations around its inherent dangers. We all care deeply for our students and want to raise awareness.
