🍁 November Service Club: Caring for the Earth Through Seasonal Change

As the seasons shift and the leaves begin to fall, our Lower School Service Club is turning its attention to caring for the environment and preparing our campus for winter. Throughout November, students will take part in hands-on projects that explore composting, soil health, and the natural cycles that sustain our ecosystem.

🪱 Friday, November 7 | 3:20–4:45 p.m. | Third-Fifth Grade
Worm Composting with the Preschool Adventure Learning Center (PALC)
Students will partner with our neighbors at the Preschool Adventure Learning Center (PALC) located right next door, to install new in-ground worm compost bins. PALC’s beautiful garden is a thriving example of community generosity, where the food they grow is shared with anyone who wants it, and even with local restaurants. Their incredible pumpkins and festive fall display have brought life and color to the neighborhood, serving as an inspiring reminder of how growing and giving can go hand in hand. By building worm compost bins together, students will make a meaningful contribution to our neighboring community while learning how composting can support the health of PALC’s garden.

🌿 Friday, November 14 | 3:20–4:35 p.m. | Kindergarten-Fifth Grade
Worm Bin Build with Athletic Director Jo Ito
Students will work with Athletic Director Jo Ito to refresh the worm bin built last year and assemble a new composting system. They’ll learn how worms transform food waste into nutrient-rich soil and how ongoing care keeps the system thriving.

🍂 Friday, November 21 | 3:20–4:35 p.m. | Kindergarten-Fifth Grade
Fall Yard Clean-Up with Bush Groundskeepers Rachel Skokan and Madison Opp

Bush’s dynamic garden duo, Rachel Skokan and Madison Opp, keep Bush beautifully blooming through every season. With their care and expertise, our campus gardens thrive as vibrant outdoor classrooms for students and the community.

Students will join Rachel and Madison to help care for our own campus, focusing on the Middle School Courtyard, where fallen leaves can make this busy space messy and slippery. This clean-up helps keep the area safe and welcoming while teaching students how leaf relocation and composting contribute to healthy soil and gardens across campus.

Together, these projects highlight how seasonal change invites us to care for the Earth, nurturing our community while giving back to the environment that sustains us.
