Lower School Reading Week Begins Monday, March 30

Dear Bush Lower School Community,

Bush School students are avid readers and nothing brings our community together more than great books! To celebrate this culture of reading, we will hold our third annual Reading Week. This year we will focus on poetry. This will kick off National Poetry Month, which lasts the whole month of April. This event-filled week will include several fun poetic themed days, a book drive, a K-5 reading challenge, and an author visit from a local author, Jessixa Bagley. Along with our Lower School celebrations, the Bush School Book Fair will occur Tuesday, March 31 through Thursday, April 1, in the Community Room. Read more about daily events your child can participate in below.

Many of the activities are optional ones that students can choose to participate in independently, but there are a few activities and events that students will participate in with their classes.

Weeklong Optional Activities:
  • Log your reading minutes to reach our school-wide goal of 22,000 minutes of reading in one week! Reading logs will be provided to teachers. On Friday, April 2, we will calculate all the minutes read from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade to see if we reached our goal!
  • “Guess the Simile” Door Challenge: Classes and teachers all over the Lower School will display a mystery simile on their doors for visitors to guess. Students will have a scavenger hunt that can only be completed by visiting each door in the Lower School.
  • Daily Mystery Teacher Poems: Daily mystery teacher poets will be featured at the Reading Week table on the second floor. Stop by to see if you can figure out who each reader is!
  • Find Your Form: Daily poems will be posted at the Reading Week table as well as sent to homeroom teachers. Students will read them and attempt to identify the form of poetry.
  • Poetry House in the MLK Community Center Commons: Student poets will share original poetry during lunch times on the MLK stage.
Special Daily Activities:

  • Monday, March 30
Book Drive for Gently Used Books (collection at Reading Week table on the second floor)
Donations will go to Friends of the Seattle Public Library
  • Tuesday, March 31
