Boys Golf: Aydin M. ’29 named WIAA Student-Athlete of the Week

There might not be a better way to start off a freshman athletic career! This past week, Upper School Ninth Grade student Aydin M. ’29 was named a Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Student-Athlete of the Week. He was one of twelve student-athletes selected from across the state and was honored for his efforts this fall on the golf course. He opened his season with three straight top-two finishes, leading the Bush Boys varsity Golf team to a 4-0 start.

“Aydin is a special player,” Bush Athletic Director Jo Ito said. “His ability to stay calm and composed, especially in high-pressure moments, is remarkable. He stepped into a leadership role right away and has consistently performed at a high level since joining the team. That is impressive for any athlete, but especially for a ninth grader. Coach Erin (Szekely) coached him in Middle School and has long anticipated seeing him compete with the best at the Varsity level. We are eager to see what he will bring through the rest of the fall season, and into the spring, when the top players will return to compete for a spot at the state championships.”

Aydin started the fall strong, placing runner-up in the opening week with a score of 36. He bounced back and won Week 2 (33), and then tied for first in Week 3 (36). Last week, Aydin eagled the 9th hole to erase a two-stroke deficit and secure the tie, helping Bush defeat Overlake 152–158. Most recently, Aydin scored a 33 to tie with Justin C. ’28 for first.

Aydin and the Bush varsity golf team is back in action on Wednesday, October 8 against Granite Falls.
