Meet Athletics, Health, Wellness, and Engagement Specialist Joyce Walker
By: Donés Williams, Communications Associate
The Bush School welcomes Joyce Walker as the Athletics, Health, Wellness, and Engagement Specialist. A skilled community leader and professional basketball player, she has a strong background in mentoring young athletes as both a coach and a teacher.
Joyce is a Seattle native who attended Garfield High School, where she developed her basketball skills. In her senior year, she was signed to play collegiate basketball at Louisiana State University from 1980 to 1984, where she majored in Psychology.
After playing on several professional teams throughout her career, such as the Harlem Globetrotters, she retired in 2013 and became a Health and Wellness teacher at Highline High School in Burien, WA. After that, Joyce took on a Physical Education teacher role. During this time, she furthered her journey as an educator and earned her M.A. in Education from the University of Washington in 2024.
As a new faculty member, Joyce hopes to gain a breadth of knowledge from her colleagues and support the growth of the Bush Athletics Department. Joyce is a fan of all things basketball, and proudly reps her home football team, the Seattle Seahawks.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Joyce to the Bush community,” shared Athletic Director Jo Ito. “Her accomplishments in basketball and as a community leader speak for themselves. What excites me most is the experience, perspective, and relationships she brings to our program. Joyce has been an important part of the Seattle basketball community for decades, and we look forward to the positive impact she will have on our student-athletes while helping us build stronger connections with the broader basketball community throughout the region.
