Six Bush Student-Athlete Sign To Compete at The Next Level

In front of family and friends, six Bush student-athletes were celebrated on Wednesday, May 14 for their outstanding athletic careers at Bush and their commitment and hard work to be able to compete at the collegiate level next year.

“College Athlete Signing Day is one of our favorite events of the year,” Bush Athletic Director Jo Ito said. “Each year, it is a privilege to celebrate our most dedicated and hard-working athletes as they achieve their goal of competing at the next level. Reaching these elite levels of competition requires countless hours of practice and preparation, and it is truly inspiring to see our athletes serve as role models for their younger teammates.”

Barack A. '25 (University of Rochester), Elise F. '25 (Marquette University), Duncan F.-S. '25 (Brown University), Benjamin H. '25 (Tufts University), and Lincoln N. '25 (Vassar College) will all be running cross country and/or track - the largest number of runners deciding to compete at the next level. For Bush Head Cross Country and Distance Coach Karsten Kaufmann, this is a significant milestone as he’s worked with this groups for all four years as varsity athletes.

“As freshman you could tell these kids were special,” Karsten said. “They  fed off of learning from each other, they were all so committed and bought into the idea of improvement and it really was a snowball effect throughout the years. So I can't say I’m surprised we are here, but I’m extremely proud.”

Charlotte P. '25 (University of Washington) who has contributed to various Bush athletics throughout her four years as a varsity athlete, will be rowing next fall.

All six of the seniors have made huge impacts on the athletics program, including Barack, Benjamin, Duncan, and Lincoln, who were all part of the 2022 boys state cross country championship - the first in Bush school history.

“I commend each of them for their efforts,” Jo said. “They are leaving a lasting legacy here at Bush, and I cannot wait to see what they accomplish - on and off the playing fields -  as they begin their collegiate careers.”
