2026 Fall Season Playoff Update - 10/26/26

Jo Ito
Our Blazer athletes and coaches are gearing up for another exciting week of competition! The stakes are getting higher, and our teams are ready to rise to the challenge. Enjoy today's Upper School Playoff Update, catch up on the latest highlights, and, most importantly, come out and cheer on our Blazers as they look to reach new heights and make their mark this postseason!

Girls Soccer:
The Girls Varsity Soccer team climbed to the very top of the state’s regular-season rankings heading into the Emerald Sound Conference Tournament with their sights set on securing one of four coveted berths to State. The team closed out its regular season in impressive fashion, delivering a convincing 3-1 victory over the Bear Creek Grizzlies on last Thursday’s Senior Night. Following the game, Head Coach Marcelino Dumpit and his coaching staff continued their long-standing tradition of honoring the team's seniors - Flora T., Anna K., Makenna K., Stella P., and Japna R. - as they celebrated their final regular-season home game at Washington Park. But the Blazers’ impact extends well beyond the scoreboard. Earlier in the week, Upper School players joined the 5th-grade team for practice, leading drills, sharing advice, and encouraging the younger Blazers to dream of one day wearing the Varsity uniform themselves. It was a terrific display of leadership and a reminder of what makes our athletics community special. This Blazers squad is finding an impressive balance between competing at the highest level, managing the demands of academics, and making a lasting impact on the school community. And now, with the postseason officially here, they're ready for their next challenge! After losing a hard fought battle against Bear Creek in the first round of the playoffs, the Blazers fell to the consolation side of the bracket with their playoff hopes still alive, but now it's time to lock in and get results. Tomorrow's loser out matchup provides the perfect opportunity for a bounce-back performance that will set the tone for the rest of the postseason.

Cross Country:
The Varsity Cross Country team turned in an impressive performance at last week's Emerald Sound Conference Championships, with several Blazers making their mark among the conference's top runners. The girls delivered a strong team effort, placing several runners in the top 20 and securing an impressive third-place team finish. Leading the charge was Ryan E. ’27, who raced to fourth place, followed by Isabelle O. ’27 in 11th and Ella Miller just seconds behind in 12th. With momentum on their side, the girls now have their sights set on this weekend's District Championships, where another strong team performance could earn them a coveted berth to State. On the boys' side, Luke M. ’28 continued his outstanding season with an eighth-place finish, solidifying his place among the district’s top runners. Leo N. ’27 wasn't far behind, crossing the finish line in 16th. Both runners will look to deliver their best performances at this weekend's District Championships at South Whidbey, with individual State berths on the line and a chance to compete in Pasco on Saturday, November 8. Beyond the competition, the team took time following the Conference Championships to celebrate its seniors: Lewis N., Leo N., Ryan E., and Isabelle O. Each has left a meaningful mark on the program, helping build a team culture defined by encouragement, healthy competition, and genuine support for one another. Their leadership and contributions will be felt long after their final races in a Blazers uniform. Next stop: District Championships at South Whidbey!
  • District 2 Cross Country Championships: Saturday, October 31 - 11:30 a.m. at South Whidbey
Boys Golf:
The Blazers Boys Varsity Golf team earned its third consecutive conference championship last Tuesday at the Emerald Sound Conference Tournament at Riverbend Golf Course. Sophomore Aydin M. led the team with an outstanding 4-under-par performance, earning Tournament MVP honors. Last year’s tournament champion and MVP, Justin C. ’28, finished second at even par, while Neil N. ’28 placed fourth with a 77. On a beautiful fall day, the Blazers also saw strong finishes from Parker S. ’28, who tied for ninth, and Lang R. ’28 and Jonathan H. ’28, who both tied for 13th. The conference’s allocations for the spring state tournament won’t be announced until March. The Blazers’ top three finishers can count on advancing, while their fourth through sixth finishers will await confirmation this spring. In the meantime, the team can celebrate another conference title and look ahead to defending last school year’s historic state championship.

Girls Volleyball:
The Girls Varsity Volleyball team may not have gotten the results it hoped for to wrap up its season, but there's plenty to be proud of. Living up to their reputation as a scrappy, all-heart squad, the Blazers battled in their last matches of the season. Last Friday's regular-season finale against Eastside Prep was also a special occasion as the Blazers celebrated Senior Night, honoring Lulu S., Riley C., Masha K., Elise S., Gretchen S., and Liora J. The emotional celebration, shared by teammates and fans alike, spoke volumes about the lasting impact this group has made on the program - not just through their contributions on the court, but, perhaps more importantly, through the team culture they've helped build. First-year Head Coach Malina Baker found just the right words to recognize the seniors, celebrate the team's accomplishments, and set the tone for future seasons.

Boys Ultimate:
The Blazers boys ultimate season came to a close Tuesday with a close 9-11 loss to the Overlake Owls in the No. 4 vs. No. 3 play-in game. After falling behind early, the Blazers mounted an impressive comeback, nearly closing the gap before ultimately falling short. Despite the loss, the team wrapped up a competitive and fun season thanks to the efforts of its coaches. A highlight was the team’s overnight trip, featuring non-league games against Bellingham High School and Lakeside. Positive feedback from players and coaches could make overnight trips a regular addition to future seasons.

Boys Tennis
The Boys Tennis Program wrapped up a successful season under new head coach Brad Delahunty, who struck a great balance between building on the traditions and routines established by former head coach Cara Holloway (who remained on staff as an assistant coach) and introducing fresh ideas and strategies of his own. Six Blazers represented Bush at last weekend’s Emerald Sound Conference Championship Tournament, where summer-like weather set the stage for a full day of competitive tennis. All six battled hard to keep their postseason hopes alive, with seniors Sam F. and Finn C. leading the charge. Entering the tournament as the No. 3-seeded doubles team, the duo advanced to the second day of competition before falling to a tough Overlake pair in the consolation bracket. The loss brought their impressive tournament run to an end, just one victory shy of securing a spot at State.
